Bucks County Commissioners Approve Federal HUD Grants

The Bucks County Commission voted to approve a plan to distribute more than 3 million dollars in grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. These grants are provided to the county by HUD to help alleviate housing pressures. While low-income Bucks County residents and senior citizens are the primary beneficiaries, HUD projects often act to beautify and uplift communities through the economic benefits of new development and long-term housing sustainability.

Federal funds totaling 3.2 million were allocated for the county in April, but local officials did not approve a plan for distributing funds until late June. The commission voted to allocate the funds to almost 30 different projects across Bucks County. The bulk of the funding comes in the form of Community Block Grants, which work to ease housing issues by upgrading current affordable housing, as well as reaching out to the current houseless population to provide services and housing aid. There are also large portions of the grant set aside for senior housing needs and city development.

Bucks County has set aside close to 420k to provide funding for the county Housing Services Department, which offers services like job training and assistance, as well as rental and emergency housing support. Other funds are going towards a data analytics system that tracks and manages at-risk populations for housing needs, to better understand any issues and to tackle them beneficially and cost-effectively.

Federal HOME Investment Partnership

The federal HOME Investment Partnership is also kicking in almost 1 million dollars in housing funds for Bucks County. This funding is offered through the County/Federal Home Investment Partnership program, which uses federal dollars to increase accessibility to affordable housing by working with local officials. The majority of the HOME funds (800k) are going to a 52-unit 55+ development in Perkasie. The remaining 200k is set to be distributed to other housing-related services throughout Bucks County.

You can find detailed information relating to past and current housing approval grants via the Bucks County Website, and more detailed data about the Federal HOME partnership on the HUD Website.
