Frightening Lights, Haunted Nights & Spooky Delights!

Your Halloween Inspiration Guide for All Things Halloween!

Frightening lights, haunted nights and spooky delights! This is Halloween!

Remember how you were always told to be yourself? Well, why be yourself when you can be Cher, Spider-Man or the Queen of England? Halloween means you can be whoever you want! If you have little ones you get the nostalgia of your youth through their eyes as they trick or treat in the streets.

If you aren’t quite feeling the Halloween spirit this year, we are here to help. Here is some inspiration on how to celebrate the spookiest season of all!

Haunted House:

If you want to get into the Halloween spirit, let it possess you. First, clean off the authentic cobwebs you’ve been neglecting and then head over to your favorite party store (most likely in that building around the corner that has been sitting vacant for ten months out of every year). The next step is the most critical one, go wild! This is the one time of year where you can truly go off the walls, bonkers with your home.

Aim to make your home the petrifying one on the block, inside and out! Halloween doesn’t necessarily need to be scary, although do we recommend it. You can opt for a less gruesome theme including but not limited to Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or perhaps a 1950s throwback theme.

If you want to lean into the Halloween aesthetic then get gruesome with it! Get the whole family involved, break out the fog light and make your home the best-dressed house on the block.

Here are some seriously eerie theme ideas you can have for free:

Friday the 13th, zombies, anything Stephen King, witches, sci-fi dystopia and the spookiest of all… the dentist’s office.

Costumes:

This can be a stressful one for good reason for many. Who am I going to be this year? You can always pluck an idea from the pop culture zeitgeist of the year. This year you are bound to see a surplus of Iron Man, Rey, Pennywise, Captain Marvel and Jokers running around.

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to have a good costume, you might even be able to make use of what you have around you. Just get creative! If you have a little one, wrap them up in toilet paper and now you’re a mommy to a mummy! It’s easy to make any costume a bit more exhilarating by adding blood to it, have some flannel? Zombie farmer! Business shirt? Zombie worker…although if you play that part every Monday morning you might want to switch it up instead.

Try dressing up as someone you know, dress up as your friend, dad, or grandma! If you want to go the power in numbers route, group ideas are the way to go.

Some group/duo ideas:

Toy Story, The Avengers, Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Golden Girls, The Addams Family, Spice Girls, Space Jam, Frozen, Futurama, Bob’s Burger, variations of Tom Hanks characters, Calvin and Hobbes, Nightmare Before Christmas, Bonnie and Clyde, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, Sonny and Cher, Ricky and Lucy, Super Mario and friends, and the iconic ham and cheese.

Activities:

We live in an area with some of the best haunted attractions in the nation.

In Philadelphia, you have the #1 rated in the nation by Forbes Terror Behind The Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary. Eastern State Penitentiary is already spooky enough with its long, horrific history and stories of being legitimately haunted. Here you can choose to walk through the six areas of this prison built-in 1829.

If haunted houses aren’t your thing you can take part in the fall festivities and Oktoberfest in the area. A day in Peddler’s Village is always a day well spent particulary when you viewing the scarecrows on display and relishing in all the fantastic local small businesses.

Take a look at our October Happenings post for everything going on in the area (including some exciting concerts!). If you are planning a night on binging horror movies is always a good option as well, if you don’t scare easy give Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House a try.

Monster Mash:

If you’ve done your due diligence, your home should petrify Freddy Krueger himself. It’s time to show off your haunted home with a graveyard smash, a monster mash!

Put on your best costume and take pride in showing off your haunted estate. Tell all your guests the harrowing tale of the time that you spilled coffee on your favorite couch! Halloween is all about creativity, so make sure the food is ghoulish. Ghost shaped cookies, spaghetti with meatballs doubling as eyeballs, spider hot dogs, Butterbeer plucked straight from the pages of Harry Potter, Jekyll & Gin which glows in the dark under a blacklight or the classic fake syringe with a shot in it. Of course, don’t forget the essentials like candy corn, chocolate, and sour candy!

You can plan out some games, bob for apples, orchestrate a murder mystery game, tell ghost stories, tarot cards or break out the Ouija board!

Happy Halloween!

Above all else, have fun. Halloween isn’t supposed to be work! Channel your inner child, lean into the spirit, celebrate with the spirit of Casper the Friendly Ghost with the appearance of the Wicked Witch of the West!
